A guide to insurance

Private medical insurance

Personal Finance and Savings

Private medical insurance (PMI) enables you to jump the NHS queue and to enjoy hospital treatment in the comfort of a private room.

A standard plan covers hospital emergency treatment including ‘in-patient’ and ‘day-care’ treatment. Comprehensive plans may include ‘out-patient’ treatment, dental treatment, complementary medicine and maternity cover too.

PMI plans do not cover chronic or critical illness which cannot be cured. Plans usually exclude treatment for HIV or AIDS, hazardous sports, infertility, cosmetic surgery, treatment overseas and GP services. Standard plans also exclude pregnancy related conditions and dental treatment.

Once you have a plan you will have to renew it each year and your premiums will increase with age. You may be able to keep costs down by volunteering to pay an excess, or by paying annually rather than monthly.
