Homeowners have been advised not to leave boxes from expensive purchases outside their home, as they could be advertising their possessions to burglars
Liverpool Victoria stated that prospective burglars could be tipped off about certain items by discarded packaging, prompting the firm to urge people to be more careful.
The company said people had to be aware of the risk, especially at times such as Christmas and New Year when people are likely to buy expensive items and throw away the boxes.
A spokesperson commented: "I think people need to look at how they are disposing and recycling, particularly with electrical goods."
Liverpool Victoria also recommended that people make sure that any expensive new purchases do not take them over the limit for their home contents insurance.
According to a study by YouGov, more than 16 million people advertise the contents of their home to potential thieves by leaving clues about them outside their homes.
