Eco-awareness prompting green product launches

12 June, 2007

The general public's growing awareness of environmental issues is leading to more financial service providers offering eco-friendly products

The growing awareness of environmental issues is leading to more eco-friendly products being offered by financial service providers.

Duncan Bowker, public relations manager for Co-operative Financial Services (CFS), said he believed that car owners are becoming more aware of the impact driving has on the environment. He explained how there were now more incentives for consumers to buy greener vehicles and highlighted the charges that 4x4 vehicles now face: "I think there is a growing concern within consumers that they need to do more to address their own individual carbon footprint."

Bowker also said that ethical consumerism was constantly on the rise, adding that he believed more and more insurers and financial service providers will be exploring ways they can integrate eco-products into their portfolios: "I think it will be the way forward. Eco-insurance, green mortgages, I think they're just the first of many products you'll see coming through," Bowker commented.

And he didn't limit such products to general insurance offerings, adding: "As an insurer we're continually looking at ways in which we can integrate more green aspects to a whole host of products."
