Taking an inventory 'helps with home insurance claims'

5 March, 2008

Householders should take an inventory of their possessions to assist them if they ever have to make a claim on their home insurance, it has been suggested

A spokesperson for price comparison website uSwitch.com explained that people should also obtain a valuation for individual items that are worth a lot of money and perhaps even go as far as photographing them.

He said: "A lot of people don't actually know what the things they have are actually worth. Obviously an insurance company will look at single high-value items and they may refuse to cover them in the event of a claim if they were not informed about it beforehand."

The representative added that people also need to read the small print of their policies to check exactly what steps they have to take to ensure that all their personal belongings are covered.

Figures released by the Association of British Insurers reveal that its members pay out £9 million worth of home insurance claims a day in 2006.
