Shoppers having more than one credit card can easily become confused, it has been claimed.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) accepts that there are many legitimate reasons for people to have a number of cards to carry out their daily transactions.
These include having separate cards for business and personal use, while it may also be advantageous to have a card with a transfer balance and low interest rate and another for purchases.
James Ketchell, spokesperson for the CCCS, said: "It's really a result of the UK's more liberal approach to credit and credit cards to other European countries.
"But it can become confusing and people really have to stay on top of their credit card spending and their finances as a whole really."
He added that people must remain aware that they must repay their debts at some point and to not become detached from the amount they borrow on their cards.
A report from Datamonitor revealed that the average Briton held 1.4 credit cards at the end of 2006, more than twice the level of any other country in western Europe.
