The earth from space

One small step for man...

7 March, 2007

BUPA has made its own giant leap for mankind, announcing that it is now offering travel insurance for those boldly going where few have gone before… into space

Considering that Richard Branson is laying plans down for intergalactic flights before the decade is out and test flights are due to start this year, space travel has never been more of a reality.

BUPA already offers specialist travel insurance to skiers and gap-year travellers amongst others, and provides cover to customers visiting 190 countries across the globe – so the insurer doesn’t see space as such a huge step forward.

Nick Potter, head of BUPA Travel says: “We are looking into space tourism as a real market for the next generation of travellers, especially as Russian cosmonauts have already taken tourists up into space.

“Obviously we have to take into account various issues, such as the effect such a journey would have on the human body, although clarity will come in this new area of travel within the next decade.”

In an extension to BUPA Travel’s young person’s Explorer insurance policy, the company have also just launched cover for those aged 36-45 who wish to take a career break. Covering a huge range of traditional gap-year activities, such as bungee jumping, white water rafting and gorilla trekking, this is a welcome addition to BUPA Travel’s current offerings.

Potter continues: “BUPA Explorer has proved a popular way for the younger gap year traveller to protect themselves during their travels and we have now tailored this to meet the needs of a more mature market.”
