Pensioners go plastic fantastic

23 February, 2007

Plastic surgery is shedding its traditional ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ stigma, as it is revealed that over 230,000 pensioners have already gone under the knife

One in ten retirees are keen to embrace plastic surgery and botox to change something that they don’t like about themselves, in a bid to rediscover their former youthful looks.

The nation is becoming vainer and pensioners are not as immune to it as some might think – most admit to spending more time than the younger generations on traditional beauty methods.

Eight out of ten retirees say that they always take care of how they dress, with almost nine asserting that they believe everyone should take pride in their appearance and care about they way they look to others. In addition, almost half say that Brits should do all they can to look younger.

However, even though one in ten would go under the knife, only two per cent have, leaving the country trailing behind others like Australia where one in ten retirees have gone under the knife.

Alison Green, a spokesperson for AXA says: “It is interesting to see those over 65 years of age moving away from the more conventional things we would expect them to be spending their pensions on – however many can afford this because they have benefited from the boom in property prices and had good final salary pension schemes provided by their employers.

“Those currently in work, who would like to afford this type of lifestyle in retirement, need to think very carefully about the income they will receive and how they could finance such luxuries – people need to take a more ‘hands on’ approach when planning their retirement income.”
