Postcode can affect motor insurance

23 January, 2007

Motor insurance is not based on the levels of road deaths in proximity to a driver but rather the area in which they live, a leading insurer said today

Factors relating to where a motorist leaves their car parked including the local crime rate and how many people live there, are much more likely to have an effect on an insurance policy.

The comments come from Direct Line spokesperson Emma Holyer, who said that driving insurance was as much about postcodes as the number of accidents in a particular town.

"It very much depends on where in the country you are certainly. Urban areas incur more charges because more theft will occur there, while costs will be less in rural areas because there are less people around," she revealed.

"It does come down to the full postcode of your road."

She added that the number of road deaths near you didn't really relate to insurance premiums as most road deaths are caused on motorways and "people don't really live on motorways".

Instead, Ms Holyer insisted that it is all to do with what region you live in, where you leave your car at night as well as a driver's previous history.
