Around 15.44 million people are intending to book 2007 holidays before the end of February, with a massive 9 per cent purchased in the week after Christmas, as back-to-work Brits look forward to their next break from the office
Most people intend to spend around £677 per person when forking out for this much-anticipated holiday, but 19 per cent will push the boat out and spend over £1,000 per person.
In addition, most winter holidaymakers have this year opted to travel down under for a dose of summer sunshine rather than hit the slopes. Sydney alone has seen a 25 per cent increase in the number of visiting Brits, but it is Melbourne which has seen a staggering 140 per cent rise in British tourists compared to this time last year.
For those already on their holidays, the top destinations are Paris, Sydney, Dublin, New York and Dubai, and of those who can’t wait for their next getaway the Londoners are keenest, with 36 per cent taking advantage of a post-Christmas deal.
Marketing director for Barclays Insurance, Mark Till, comments: “Long haul breaks are becoming increasingly popular over the Christmas and New Year period, with Brits quite prepared to trek further afield for the chance of some proper winter sunshine.”
However Robert O’May, travel insurance manager for Sainsbury’s bank cautions: “It is easy to get excited about destinations, resorts and even flights, but travel insurance may seem a little mundane. There are hundreds of policies to choose from so it’s worth making sure you not only find a policy that offers quality cover and benefits, but one that is also competitively priced.”
