Overseas travel is ever popular

23 January, 2007

Brits now take an average of three short breaks each year, with research from American Express predicting that the number travelling abroad will rise again in 2007 for the third year running

Weekend breaks, holidays of over 5 days and business trips are all expected to become even more frequent occurrences over the course of the year, with a 3 per cent increase in all trips and a 5 per cent increase in people taking foreign holidays.

The survey has also found that leisure breaks are seeing the most significant rises, with 11 per cent of holidaymakers planning more weekend breaks in the UK, and 12 per cent thinking of jetting off to sunnier climes.

American Express Insurance Services’ marketing manager, Joanne Field, said: “Not only are Britons planning more trips both here and abroad, but they are booking more independently than last year.”

Field also goes on to note the merits of booking comprehensive annual travel insurance commenting: “It is not only cost effective, but it endures holidaymakers are protected for cancellation and curtailment from the moment they book a trip – it also allows them to capitalise on last minute deals knowing they are protected.”

Unsurprisingly, the most popular reason for taking a short break was to ‘get away from it all’ and enjoy a relaxing break, although visiting friends and family featured very highly on Brits’ agendas, followed closely by those travelling overseas for business purposes.
