New Year's Eve may be a time for celebration but insurance firms are warning homeowners to ensure they are properly covered before opening their doors to partygoers.
Holding a bash for family, friends and anyone else who happens to drop by can often cause untold damage to homes and furniture.
Particularly vulnerable are carpets and curtains, with the risk of being spoiled, often irretrievably, by cigarette burns or spilled wine.
Research by insurance firm Cornhill Direct shows that ringing in the new year is not always a happy time, with one in ten party hosts claiming to have been the victim of theft. They all said number of items, including CDs, DVDs and clothes have disappeared after a big bash.
Organisers are also spending up to £200 on refreshments for guests and almost half claim to have had their carpets soiled by spilled food and red wine stains.
"We would suggest hosts should move as many breakable objects out of the way as possible and have plenty of bins around for people to put their rubbish in," Mark Bishop, spokesperson for Cornhill Direct, said.
"For peace of mind we recommend adding accidental damage to your home contents insurance policy."
More people are expected to attend house parties this year as revellers attempt to avoid being caught outside in the storms expected to blast Britain on New Year's Eve.
