Badgers, bollards and bizarre insurance claims

22 December, 2006

People rarely think of insurance as a crazy topic of conversation but it seems a number of claims go beyond the usual car crashes and burglary

New research says that objects ranging from 'aggressive bollards' to 'confused badgers' have been the subject of some of the more bizarre insurance claims this year.

AA Insurance studied more than 180,000 calls and has compiled a list of some of the more unusual excuses.

One female caller, who received a nasty prang on the side of her vehicle, claimed "a car park bollard ran into me". Meanwhile, a separate claimant was said to have spotted a "confused badger" and swerved to miss it, managing to crash into an oncoming car instead.

Other interesting reports include a male driver crashing after "a carpet literally flew out of the van and unrolled itself. The driver added: "It was a red carpet so I drove over it."

Kevin Sinclair, managing director of AA Insurance, said: "We're used to receiving conventional claims for car damage or handbag theft but it's always interesting to hear the more unusual claims people make."

Away from the roads, one woman woke up to discover that her teeth had disappeared from her nightstand during the night, while a man claimed a replacement TV after spilling orange juice and short circuiting his current model.
