Swap the turkey for the tax forms

25 December, 2006

Christmas is renowned for being the busiest time of year, so it may come as a surprise to discover that last year thousands of people filed their self-assessment tax forms over the festive period

A new report from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) revealed that over 6,000 forms were filled in during the four-day Christmas break in 2005.

Around 3,000 individuals found a couple of hours before the parties started and filed their tax forms on New Year's Eve. Meanwhile 270 people sacked off the Queen's speech and completed their tax returns process online on Christmas Day.

Consumers are being advised to file their tax self-assessments early this year and to encourage this practice, HMRC has set up an online facility which aims to make it easier.

HMRC is hoping for a repeat of last year's festive tax filing and is advising people to send off their returns in plenty of time before the January 31st 2007 deadline.

"We always recommend that people file their tax returns early, avoiding the busiest periods and we are pleased to see taxpayers following our advice, even at Christmas and the new year," said Mike Shipp, HMRC director of self assessment.

"Filing online is an easy, convenient and secure way to submit your tax return," he added.
