The UK’s drivers spend a good deal of time in their cars, so it would come as no surprise that, according to recent research results, over half of the population think of their car as being of a particular sex, with 17 per cent even going as far as giving it a name.
Online insurer yesinsurance.co.uk conducted the survey of 4,000 UK drivers and found that 1 in 20 women have given their car a name, compared with 1 in 10 men. Of those giving their car a gender, 36 per cent said it was female in relation to only 16 per cent who said it was male.
Yesinsurance.co.uk spokesman Paul Purdy commented that “People often develop loving relationships with their cars, many attaching human qualities to them. To many people car ownership is similar to owning a pet.”
As for the names given to the cars, the research found that it was very varied with Betsie as the most popular, closely followed by Freddie. The top 10 in order of popularity are;
1.Betsie
2. Freddie
3. Babe
4. Charlie
5. Henry
6. Rita
7. Cleo
8. Jasper
9. Girl
10. Gilbert
