Angela Knight, the chief executive of the British Bankers' Association (BBA), has offered consumers five tips to keep their finances in good order during 2008.
Knight states that people should check their bank statements to "keep an eye on their spending", not to ignore utility bills when they come through the door and try to pay them monthly, watch their credit card spending, try to save more and speak to their bank if they encounter financial problems.
The chief executive also highlights recent figures showing historically low mortgage approvals, rising utility bills and argues that the impact of the credit crunch is still being felt.

However, Knight also states that by using "a bit of old-fashioned common sense" consumers will be able "to enjoy 2008".
In December, the BBA announced that over the course of November, mortgage activity was "noticeably" lower than during the same period in 2008.
It also said that unsecured borrowing was "subdued".
