Danger for December motorists

15 November, 2007

As the nights draw in and winter approaches drivers are being warned to think ahead about the increased risk of breakdowns and accidents caused by hazardous conditions.

The clocks have gone back and with the nights drawing in sooner, Britain invariably sees an increase in road accidents. Typically, December was the most dangerous month last year, with the casualty rate being 29 per cent higher than in April 2006.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, said: “Figures clearly show that as the nights draw in there is an uplift in the accident rate. Winter weather conditions only compound this danger, as well as increasing the chances of car breakdown.

"Motorists should ready themselves and their vehicles now for the seasonal changes. Drivers should also be extra vigilant, and prepared for the potential actions of less responsible road users.”

moneysupermarket.com's top winter tips:

  • Regularly check the oil level, anti-freeze, hazard lights and tyres for tread depth and pressure. Check the spare tyre is in good condition too.
  • Have the essentials in your car, such as a torch, reflective triangle sign, high-visibility jacket, first aid kit and jump leads.
  • Keep adequate distance from the vehicle in front and take particular care to look out for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
  • In cold or icy conditions, drive carefully and ensure you don’t accelerate, brake or take sharp corners suddenly.
Mason added: “As well as ensuring you have all the recommended equipment to hand in case of a breakdown, drivers should consider adding roadside assistance to their insurance policy, or taking out standalone breakdown cover.”
