Halloween Home Hell

  • 3.6 million people victims after tricks backfire.
  • 97% increase in claims during Halloween week.
  • Halloween damage costs average of £117 to repair.

Halloween could be the night from hell for millions of homeowners. Research reveals 3.6 million homeowners are likely to face damage caused by over enthusiastic tricksters this year. The average amount spent to repair damage is £117, but almost one in ten (7%) will have to spend more than £250. Last October, Saga Home Insurance experienced a 97% increase in claims and paid out in excess of £300,000 for vandalism caused by Halloween pranksters.

While one in twelve (8%) of homeowners experience harmless, funny pranks on Halloween, almost double (15%) have had to endure egg throwing. Furthermore, over 1.4 million of the UK population have been victims of malicious or harmful "tricks" such as vandalism and broken windows.

The police report Halloween to be one of the busiest times of the year for the emergency services and anti-social behaviour. The over 50s are less enthusiastic than the under 50s about Halloween celebrations. A third (36%) of the older generation choose not to celebrate it or give out treats, compared to just 22% of those under 50. Meanwhile, a further one in five (17%) over 50s go as far as drawing their curtains and pretending to be out. Women are more generous than men, with almost a third (29%) indulging trick or treaters, compared to less than a fifth (18%) of men.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman, Saga Group adds "Halloween is one of the worst days of the year for vandalism. For most people it will end without incident, but for a few it may be an expensive night. Taking a few simple steps, for example moving garden ornaments out of sight could help reduce the likelihood of vandalism. We would also urge all homeowners to check their home insurance provides adequate cover should vandals strike."
