Budget your way out of debt

Anyone struggling with post-Christmas debt should draw up a budget and avoid the January sales

James Ketchell, a spokesperson for the charity, said that it was important people set a time period for paying of any credit or store card debt they might have accumulated over Christmas.

Ketchell also told people to avoid the sales to miss out on adding another layer of debt on top of anything they may have incurred at the end of last year.

He said: "Budgeting is always important, at any time of the year – but especially now."

However, he added that there would be some people who just did not have the money to meet payments. These people, he said, should seek independent advice.

Chartered accountancy firm Grant Thorton has predicted 28,000 individuals are facing insolvency in the first quarter of 2008 due to Christmas debt.
