'Best to be open about debt'

People should be open with their partner and families if they have debt problems, one industry body believes.

A spokesperson for the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) said: "A problem shared is a problem halved. It's a big element of people in debt - there are lots of people who have serious debt problems who haven't told their partners about their situation."

He added that by doing so people would at least relieve some of the stress involved in dealing with debt.

But, he said, people should also make sure that they discuss financial matters with an independent financial adviser - both before taking on any debt and if they got in to problems further down the line.

According to research conducted by Abbey Loans, 1.35 million people have taken out an unsecured personal loan without the knowledge of their family or partner. It estimated the value of these loans totalled £7.7 billion.
